Ex-Lithuanian Diplomat Claims NATO Plans Kaliningrad Blockade
Former Lithuanian deputy foreign minister says NATO has a blockade plan for Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, as Moscow warns the move would trigger a response.
Speaking on the YouTube channel «DumaY», former Lithuanian deputy foreign minister Darius Yurgelyavichyus said that NATO has worked out a scenario to blockade Russia’s Kaliningrad Region in the event of a direct military confrontation with Moscow. He described a blockade of the «Kenigsberg (Kaliningrad) Region» as one of the real scenarios of a clash between NATO and Russia.
Yurgelyavichyus also demonstratively refused to use the name Kaliningrad, claiming that the city allegedly has nothing to do with Russia.
Earlier, Russian deputy foreign minister Aleksandr Grushko stated that NATO drills already include practising mechanisms for blocking the Kaliningrad Region. According to him, there is active militarization around the area and a build-up of forces and weaponry.
It was also reported that in December of last year, former European Corps commander General Yaroslav Gromadzinsky said Poland and other NATO members could, if necessary, launch a strike on Kaliningrad, citing what they view as a threat from Moscow.
The Russian side has repeatedly stressed that it does not intend to go to war with the European Union or NATO. President Vladimir Putin, for his part, warned that any attempt to blockade Kaliningrad would trigger an unprecedented escalation of the conflict and would be met with a harsh response from Moscow.
