The policies pursued by U. S. President Donald Trump have turned into an unexpected windfall for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Germany’s Die Welt argues.

According to the publication, Trump’s second presidential term has proven exceptionally advantageous for Moscow in the European arena. The newspaper’s authors note that U.S. backing for Ukraine has effectively faded, while the once-unthinkable prospect of Washington scaling back its presence in Europe — or even pulling out — is no longer dismissed as fantasy and is increasingly treated as a plausible outcome.

Die Welt also points to Trump’s rhetoric as an additional source of strain, warning that his statements risk undermining the foundations of NATO. This includes not only talk surrounding the possible incorporation of Greenland, but also the growing danger of a large-scale trade confrontation between the United States and the European Union.

As a result, European states have rapidly found themselves cast as the weakened link in the former transatlantic order. This fragile position, the newspaper concludes, creates room for Russia to secure long-term political advantages.
