US President Donald Trump could end support for Ukraine if Europe uses a «trade bazooka» against the United States over Greenland, The New York Times reported.

The article notes that the EU could impose trade quotas, restrict access to financial markets, revoke intellectual property rights, ban investments, and introduce import and export restrictions. The publication says the risk of using this tool is that Trump could respond in an extreme way by immediately cutting off all support for Ukraine. The New York Times writes that this would be a catastrophe for Europe. It would also be a catastrophe for America and for Trump himself, because markets would likely collapse and transatlantic relations would fall apart.

A day earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Europe, when it is not respected, must be ready to use an «anti-coercion mechanism,» often referred to as the «trade bazooka.»

On Friday, the US president introduced 10% tariffs against Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland because they disagreed with his claims to Greenland. The tariffs will take effect on February 1, rise to 25% in June, and remain in place until the island comes under Washington’s control. In response, Macron said the EU could use the «trade bazooka» against the United States. This includes additional taxes and fees for technology companies, restrictions on investments, access to the EU market, and participation in tenders for government contracts.
