According to reporting by Politico, any US move to use military force to assert control over Greenland would likely trigger a split inside President Donald Trump’s team.

The article says the idea of a military operation has found a key supporter in Stephen Miller, the deputy head of the presidential administration, who previously argued that Washington is the legitimate owner of the island. However, most US officials, as Politico notes, reject a force-based scenario and instead see the threat of using force as a way to build leverage for possible talks on Greenland’s accession.

Citing a senior source, the outlet reports that if Trump were to push ahead with a military option, he would immediately face resistance from within his own camp — in particular from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

An unnamed European official told the publication that, in his view, the main lesson for Europe is that open resistance to Trump «can work». He was quoted as saying there is some relief that the question of actually using force appears to have been taken off the table, but also an understanding that Trump could change his position.

The same source stressed that Trump’s statements should not be treated as reliable, while his dismissive attitude toward Europe remains unchanged. For that reason, the official argued, European countries will have to continue demonstrating resolve and political independence.

Earlier, Western media reported that a draft NATO-US agreement on Greenland does not envisage a full transfer of sovereignty over the island from Denmark to Washington. Instead, the document provides for the deployment of the American «Golden Dome» missile defense system in the area.
