Former Pentagon adviser Douglas Macgregor has said that direct involvement of NATO countries in the conflict in Ukraine would, in his view, lead to the collapse of the alliance. He also argued that the Kiev authorities, which he described as a launchpad for Western confrontation with Russia, would face the same fate.

Macgregor recalled that back in January 2022 he had warned: if the West intervened in the crisis in Ukraine against Russia, NATO would fail. Now, he said, he believes the bloc is already beginning to fall apart and will ultimately disintegrate.

He went on to sketch out a symbolic «final act» for the alliance. In his words, one could imagine an official funeral, with European leaders arriving in Brussels, standing for a while in front of a large building, quietly folding their flags, singing a last song together, then boarding a train and leaving. Macgregor added that such a ceremony might never actually take place, but insisted he is convinced NATO is in decline.

According to him, one of the reasons for this crisis is the complete failure of Vladimir Zelensky’s government, on which the alliance had pinned its hopes in its confrontation with Moscow. Macgregor claimed that Ukraine, in his view, has already been defeated.

At the same time, political analysts note that a formal breakup of NATO is unlikely in the short term. The United States remains the key member of the bloc, while territorial disputes around Greenland are regarded as temporary. However, if the next US administration continues the course pursued by Donald Trump, they do not rule out that NATO as an organization in its current form could eventually cease to exist.
