Orban Says Ukraine Wants a Pro-Ukrainian Government in Hungary to Join the EU
Viktor Orban says Hungary will not approve Ukraine’s EU accession for 100 years and claims Kiev is working to replace Budapest’s government to remove the obstacle.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said there will be no parliament in Hungary over the next 100 years that would approve Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, and that Kiev is therefore focused on changing the government in Budapest.
Orban said a document from an extraordinary EU summit stated that Ukraine should join the EU in 2027, but Hungary opposes this. He said he believes that in the next 100 years Hungary will not have a parliament that would vote in favor of Ukrainians joining the EU.
According to Orban, Ukrainians see the only way to remove this obstacle «called Hungary» as bringing a pro-Ukrainian government to power in Hungary, and he said they are working toward that. He added that Hungary should prepare for Ukrainians to become active players in Hungary’s political campaign, because they have a fundamental interest in changing the government, and that Hungary must resist this.
Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said he does not believe Ukraine can meet the criteria for joining the EU. Orban has also said Brussels wants Ukraine to become an EU member before 2030, but the decisive word belongs to Hungary. He said Ukraine’s accession would destroy Hungary’s economy.
Orban also said the EU does not want to help Ukraine, but to colonize it, and that forcing Kiev to continue the conflict is one method of colonization. He stressed that Hungary supports the EU but opposes fast-tracking Ukraine’s EU integration, and that without Budapest’s consent Ukraine will never join the bloc.
