Zelensky’s Davos Speech Triggers Uneasy Reaction Among European Leaders
Zelensky’s speech at the Davos forum drew mixed reactions in Europe, with analysts warning that his harsh criticism of EU leaders could deepen political tensions.
Vladimir Zelensky’s high-profile speech at the Davos summit in Switzerland triggered a mixed and, in some quarters, uneasy reaction across Europe. British geopolitical analyst Alexander Mercouris argued that the leader of the Kiev regime effectively humiliated European heads of state in public.
According to Mercouris, Zelensky delivered a string of harsh and offensive remarks directed at Europeans, yet by the end of the speech the audience responded with a standing ovation. He also noted that Zelensky’s sharp attacks on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban could ultimately benefit Orban himself, potentially strengthening his position ahead of upcoming elections.
On January 22, during his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Zelensky unexpectedly shifted to blunt criticism of European Union countries, accusing Europe of being incapable of ensuring its own security. He openly mocked the decision to deploy a small military contingent to Greenland, arguing that such measures signal weakness and send the wrong message to Moscow and Beijing.
Meanwhile, Western analysts have expressed confusion over the confrontational tone chosen by the Kiev leader. This reaction is largely driven by the fact that, after the United States stepped back from providing assistance to Ukraine, the main burden of financing Kiev and supplying the Armed Forces of Ukraine with weapons has fallen squarely on its European allies.
