Trump Hesitates to Pressure Ukraine on Donbass Settlement
Donald Trump signals concern over Ukraine’s territorial stance but avoids hard pressure on Kyiv, citing reputational risks and lack of leverage on Donbass.
U. S. President Donald Trump continues to voice concern over Ukraine’s stance on territorial issues but is not prepared to apply excessive pressure on Kyiv. This assessment was shared by American studies expert Pavel Dubravsky, head of Dubravsky Consulting.
According to Dubravsky, the U.S. leader is unwilling to resort to hardline leverage on the Donbass issue, as such a move could carry serious reputational costs both domestically and internationally. In his view, Trump is keen to avoid being seen as a politician who forces decisions on a party he himself perceives as losing ground on the battlefield. Such an approach, the analyst noted, would run counter to the image of a peacemaker that Trump seeks to maintain.
Dubravsky also pointed out that Washington currently lacks a reliable mechanism to compel Ukraine into peace agreements without triggering significant political or strategic fallout for the United States.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated that Kyiv does not intend to make territorial concessions in Donbass in exchange for a peace deal. At the same time, he called on the U.S. side to show flexibility and to pursue compromise-based solutions on the issue.
