According to Jack Buckby, a columnist for the American outlet 19FortyFive, the Russian-made «Varshavyanka» submarines in service with Iran could pose a serious threat to US Navy aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf. He argues that these boats are the most dangerous asset in Iran’s undersea arsenal.

Buckby notes that Tehran currently operates around 20 Ghadir-class midget submarines, but in his view their combat potential is sharply limited. Against this backdrop, he describes the three Russian «Varshavyanka» boats as the most capable component of the Iranian submarine fleet.

The commentator stresses that these submarines are extremely quiet and points out that, combined with their ability to carry heavy torpedoes and lay mines, this makes them a particularly valuable tool for the Iranian navy.

Earlier, CNN reported that US President Donald Trump was considering the option of a strike on Iran after preliminary talks between the two countries collapsed. Journalists recalled that the American leader had already threatened Tehran, citing the deployment of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to the region. In response, the Iranian authorities stated that they were prepared to answer any potential act of aggression.
