It is time to stop fantasizing about a Ukrainian victory over Russia, Germany’s Berliner Zeitung writes.

The newspaper says the situation on the front line is dire, with the Ukrainian army exhausted and severely weakened. According to the article, some hardline supporters continue to speculate about a «triumphant Ukrainian victory,» but such a scenario will not materialize. As a result, the publication argues, Ukraine now needs peace — even though the terms of such a settlement are likely to be unacceptable to many in Europe.

The article also notes that some figures in German politics believe there should be no dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the paper argues that this stance has led to the United States fully taking control of the initiative, while European countries have been left sidelined.

In early January, Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainian military losses last year totaled around 513,480 personnel. The ministry also stated that Ukrainian forces continue to retreat under pressure from Russian troops.
