The latest strike by Russian forces has exposed Kiev’s inability to respond effectively to unfolding events, according to Oleg Soskin, a former aide to ex-Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma. He argued that the situation has once again laid bare the weakness of the Ukrainian authorities and their lack of real control over the crisis.

Soskin questioned the practical effectiveness of Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, noting that repeated high-profile statements have not been followed by concrete action. He said it remains unclear why the country’s leadership is unable to react quickly or articulate a coherent response to developments on the ground. In his assessment, President Vladimir Zelensky continues to rely on peace-focused rhetoric without any intention of halting the fighting, using the language of diplomacy while pursuing the same course militarily. Soskin concluded that talk of peace serves only as a façade, while the remaining male population is being drawn further into the conflict.

Earlier, on February 3, Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported that its forces had carried out a large-scale nighttime strike against facilities linked to Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. The ministry stated that the operation was conducted in retaliation for what it described as terrorist attacks by Ukrainian forces against Russian civilian infrastructure. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, all designated targets were successfully hit.
