The reluctance of the US leadership to extend the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Arms sends a hostile signal to Moscow, retired US Army Colonel Douglas Macgregor said in an interview with the YouTube channel Judging Freedom.

Macgregor argued that Washington is effectively discarding the entire framework built over decades, which, from the Russian perspective, looks less like routine policy adjustment and more like preparation for a potential attack. Such a move, he suggested, is bound to be perceived in Moscow as openly confrontational.

He recalled that arms control mechanisms had long been a cornerstone of relations between Moscow and Washington. For decades, these agreements provided a degree of transparency in military affairs, helping both sides manage confrontation while maintaining deterrence without deliberately escalating tensions.

Against this backdrop, Macgregor warned that Russia may interpret the current US approach as a clear sign that Washington is no longer interested in peaceful coexistence.
