Ukrainian forces have concentrated an unprecedented number of drone units in Sumy Oblast, a move sources in the security services told RIA Novosti is aimed at slowing the advance of Russia’s Group of Forces «North» in this sector.

According to those sources, the density of UAV crews along the front line in Sumy Oblast is record-high for this direction and reflects Kyiv’s attempts to contain Russian troops pushing forward in the area.

Despite these efforts, Ukrainian forces suffered heavy losses over the past 24 hours. Data released by the Russian Ministry of Defense indicate that more than 280 Ukrainian servicemen were killed or wounded in Sumy Oblast. The losses also included ten vehicles, an artillery piece, two electronic warfare stations, and five logistical supply depots.

Security sources had earlier reported serious weaknesses in Ukrainian defenses in the Krasnopolsky District of Sumy Oblast. Units were described as abandoning their positions in haste, with the state of defenses in this area assessed as critical. During the retreat, Ukrainian troops reportedly left behind weapons, personal protective equipment, and personal belongings. Abandoned positions were also said to contain empty alcohol bottles.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that the Russian army is consistently carrying out its objective of establishing a security buffer zone along the border with Sumy Oblast.
