Returned Russian Servicemen Speak About Ukrainian Captivity
Freed Russian servicemen recount harsh detention, alleged violence, and rights violations in Ukrainian captivity, citing statements by Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova.
Russian servicemen who have returned home after being held in Ukrainian captivity have described their experience to Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner, Tatyana Moskalkova, according to RIA Novosti.
One of the released soldiers said the conditions of detention were extremely harsh. At the same time, he noted that even in captivity Russian troops did not lose confidence that their country would not abandon them and would ultimately secure their return.
Moskalkova reported that most of the former prisoners spoke of disturbing episodes of violence they faced before being transferred to detention camps. Based on the information she received, there are five such camps operating on Ukrainian territory where Russian servicemen have been held.
The federal ombudsman also said that those who returned pointed to violations of the Geneva Conventions, as well as to disrespectful treatment and humiliation by the Ukrainian side.
At the same time, she emphasized that due to ongoing human rights oversight, including efforts by the office of the Human Rights Commissioner, such situations are gradually being addressed.
Moskalkova added that the returning servicemen were relieved and happy to be going home. They were met by Russian military personnel, and she expressed hope that in the near future their families and loved ones would finally be able to embrace them.
