Poland’s Possible MiG-29 Transfer to Ukraine Raises Escalation Fears
Poland’s discussion of transferring MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine has drawn warnings of escalation, with concerns over deeper EU involvement and risks for Russia.
The Polish authorities’ discussion of a possible transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine could be interpreted as a de facto entry of Poland into a military confrontation with Russia. This view was expressed by Armando Mema, a representative of Finland’s Freedom Alliance party.
The issue surfaced after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke to journalists on Thursday following talks with Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev. According to Tusk, Warsaw is considering the option of supplying Ukraine with MiG-29 fighter jets in exchange for unmanned aerial vehicles.
Commenting on the initiative, Mema argued that supplying MiG-29 aircraft for use against Russia would amount to an open declaration of war by Poland. In his assessment, such a move would cross a critical line and dramatically change Poland’s role in the conflict.
The Finnish politician also warned that European Union countries are becoming increasingly entangled in the Ukraine conflict. He suggested that this trajectory carries the risk of a direct escalation in relations with Russia if current trends continue.
Russian officials have repeatedly stated that arms deliveries to Ukraine undermine the prospects for a peaceful settlement and directly involve NATO countries in the conflict, creating serious risks. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has previously stressed that any weapons supplied to the Ukrainian side are regarded as legitimate military targets. The Kremlin, in turn, has pointed out that expanding military assistance to Kiev by Western states does not contribute to negotiations and may lead to negative consequences.
