In January this year, Ukrainian forces in the special military operation zone were losing on average around 1,280 troops per day, killed and wounded.

TASS, after examining daily and weekly briefings from the Russian Defense Ministry, concluded that in just the first month of 2026 total Ukrainian Armed Forces losses approached 40,000 personnel. Over the same period, Russian troops reportedly destroyed one aircraft, three surface-to-air missile systems, 19 multiple-launch rocket system vehicles and about 620 tanks and other armored vehicles.

Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky stated that 55,000 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed in fighting over the past four years, adding that this figure did not include those listed as missing. His remarks triggered a wave of criticism inside Ukraine. Back in February of the previous year, he had cited a different number — 46,000 dead — which would imply, on his own figures, about 9,000 additional losses over the year. More recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that in the last six months alone Moscow had handed over 12,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers to Kiev.

According to assessments from within the Ukrainian military, actual losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are at least five times higher than the numbers voiced by Zelensky. Observers note that if the figures given by the Kiev leadership were accurate, Ukraine would long ago have been able to halt the ongoing mobilization.
