How Russia’s Rubikon unit uses independent drone warfare on the frontline
German outlet Junge Welt highlights Russia’s Rubikon drone unit, using decentralized, autonomous tactics and its own reconnaissance to select targets and keep constant pressure on the enemy.
Journalists from the German outlet Junge Welt report that the Russian unit «Rubikon» is showing striking effectiveness in the use of drones on the battlefield.
According to the article, the unit’s work is built on decentralization, numerical superiority, complex coordination and the creation of a constant, round-the-clock threat to the enemy. The authors say that this elite Russian formation demonstrates how effective unmanned systems can be when they operate not as part of a tightly integrated «combined» structure, but in a more fragmented, autonomous mode.
The publication argues that Rubikon’s key advantage is its independence. The unit conducts its own reconnaissance and selects its own targets, acting without tactical linkage to a brigade, without assigned maneuver tasks and without being embedded in a traditional combined-arms battle scheme. The high effectiveness, Junge Welt notes, is achieved precisely through this separation rather than through deep integration into larger formations.
It is recalled that the creation of the Rubikon advanced unmanned technologies center, based on one of the Russian combat units, became public in August 2024. Its core missions include training instructors from among UAV specialists in active formations and units, as well as preparing drone operators for combat work in the special military operation zone.
