Russia has unveiled the modernized RPG-29M multi-purpose grenade launcher, featuring reduced weight and expanded combat capabilities. The new system was showcased at the World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh, according to materials from Rosoboronexport as well as Russian and foreign defense publications.

According to Rosoboronexport’s presentation materials, the RPG-29M is a deeply upgraded version of the RPG-29, which became widely known for its high firepower but was also noted for its large size and heavy weight — around 12 kg, with a length of about one meter in transport position or 1.85 meters in combat position. In the new version, this drawback has been addressed: the launcher’s weight has been reduced to 4.4 kg, and its length has been cut to 620 mm.

The RPG-29M is designed to defeat heavy armored vehicles, including main battle tanks equipped with explosive reactive armor, as well as fortifications and manpower. The grenade launcher is fitted with a modern thermal imaging night sight, a laser rangefinder, and a ballistic computer, enabling effective use at any time of day.

Telegram channel Voennyy Osvedomitel reports that upgraded ammunition is being displayed alongside the launcher. The lineup includes the PG-29VM tandem round for armored targets, the TBG-29VM thermobaric round for destroying manpower in open areas and shelters, and the MG-29M multi-purpose round intended to hit vehicle crews, weapon teams, and infantry.

The significant reduction in weight, combined with the thermal sight, rangefinder, and ballistic computer, increases crew survivability and raises the likelihood of hitting a target with the first shot. The expanded range of ammunition makes the RPG-29M a more universal weapon — not only against armored vehicles, but also against manpower, which is especially relevant in modern mixed-type conflicts.
