Fierce Ukraine Counterattacks Near Zaporozhye End in Heavy Armor Losses
For three days Ukrainian troops counterattacked near Ternovatovskie heights, losing 14 armored vehicles as Russian forces secured Zaliznichnoye in Zaporozhye.
For roughly three days, Ukrainian troops have been mounting counterattacks against Russian Armed Forces positions in the eastern part of the Zaporozhye region.
According to the outlet Voennoye Obozrenie, the fiercest clashes unfolded in the area of the Ternovatovskie heights. During these assaults, Ukrainian forces reportedly lost 14 armored vehicles, including M113 armored personnel carriers and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. The publication notes that six of these vehicles were destroyed by Russian fighters at the very start of the Ukrainian push, while three more were blown up on minefields north-west of Ternovatoye.
The report says that, in attempting to retake the heights, Ukrainian units relied mainly on Western-made armor. This, the authors suggest, may indicate serious attrition in Kiev’s own fleet of armored vehicles.
By the night of 11 February, the intensity of Ukrainian attacks had decreased compared with previous days, though separate raids by small groups were still taking place.
The article also recalls that a day earlier Russian troops had taken control of the village of Zaliznichnoye in the Zaporozhye region, where Ukrainian forces had likewise tried to counterattack. Analysts cited in the report believe that securing Zaliznichnoye allows the Russian Armed Forces to push the front line further away from Gulyai-Polye and expand their foothold for a possible further advance toward Zaporozhye.
