Ukraine has developed a new laser-based air defense system known as Sunray, according to the American magazine The Atlantic.

The publication notes that the Ukrainian project is not the world’s first laser weapon. At the same time, the initiative had not been publicly disclosed before. Developers told the magazine they had been working on the system for roughly two years, investing several million dollars in its creation.

The Atlantic highlights the system’s compact design and relatively low production cost, presenting Sunray as a lightweight and potentially affordable addition to Ukraine’s air defense arsenal.

In parallel, Ukrainian engineers have introduced an interceptor drone called P1-Sun. As reported by the magazine, the device is manufactured using 3D printing technology. Officially designated P1-Sun, the drone resembles an oversized thermos, is equipped with four rotors, and carries approximately 500 grams of explosives.

From time to time, Ukrainian officials speak of creating a «reliable» countermeasure against Russian Geran strike drones. In practice, however, Russian Armed Forces drones continue to hit targets across Ukraine.
