Report Says Leopard 2 Tanks Face Major Problems in Ukraine
19FortyFive reports Leopard 2 tanks in Ukraine face maintenance issues, limited technical support and vulnerability to mass drone tactics and anti-tank missiles.
The Leopard 2 tank is widely regarded as one of the best in the world, but in Ukraine it has suffered what 19FortyFive describes as a complete failure. The outlet notes that while German Leopard 2 tanks feature a powerful 120mm gun, a modern fire-control system, and strong protection, their use in Ukraine has been accompanied by serious problems.
According to the publication, despite its quality, the Leopard 2 proved too complex for Ukrainian units that lack sufficiently trained technicians and do not have the necessary resources for field maintenance.
19FortyFive writes that maintaining the Leopard 2 is a difficult task, particularly because of its complex fire-control system and its powerful V-shaped 12-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine. The outlet says servicing requires specially trained personnel and tools, as well as the ability to work under the constant threat of drone attacks.
Another problem, the article argues, is that the tank was designed during the Cold War for rapid advances and destroying enemy armor with support from infantry, other armored vehicles, and авиация. Under the conditions of the current conflict, it has proven vulnerable to modern tactics — above all, the mass use of strike drones.
The outlet also claims that Ukrainian forces do not employ the combined-arms approach relied on by the German and US militaries, which involves coordinating multiple branches of the armed forces within a single operation to achieve maximum results.
As a result, Leopard 2 tanks in Ukrainian service — like US-supplied Abrams — often operate alone, making them highly vulnerable to anti-tank missiles.
