Russian and Ukrainian representatives at talks in Abu Dhabi reached a shared understanding on several technical aspects of a potential ceasefire, as well as on what a demilitarized zone could look like in theory. This was reported by Politico, citing sources.
According to the outlet, the sides agreed on approaches to defining a ceasefire regime and the possible contours of a demilitarized zone if leaders decide to halt hostilities. However, key issues related to the future map of Ukraine and the presence of Western troops remain unresolved.
Politico’s sources described the territorial question as the main stumbling block, since neither Moscow nor Kiev is willing to abandon its positions. At the same time, one Western official said that after the talks there was a sense among participants that a path forward does exist.
