A majority of Germans back the idea of direct talks between Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Russian President Vladimir Putin on resolving the conflict in Ukraine, according to a new survey conducted by the YouGov institute for the DPA news agency.
The poll shows that 58 percent of respondents support establishing personal contact between the two leaders, while 26 percent oppose such a move.
Support for face-to-face dialogue varies notably along political lines. Voters aligned with the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union are the strongest advocates of negotiations, with 64 percent in favor. The lowest level of support was recorded among supporters of the Left Party, where 47 percent backed the proposal.
The survey was carried out between February 6 and 9 and included 2,042 participants.
