In an interview with Polsat News, President of Poland Karol Navrotsky said Warsaw should move toward acquiring its own nuclear weapons capability.

He described himself as a firm supporter of Poland joining a nuclear project, arguing that the country is, in his words, «on the brink of armed conflict», including because of Russia. Commenting on how Moscow might react to the launch of a Polish nuclear program, Navrotsky said that Russia, as he sees it, can «react aggressively to anything».

Navrotsky stressed that Poland, in his view, should follow a path that fully complies with international norms and that the authorities need to start acting in this direction in order to begin practical work.

Debates over nuclear weapons in Poland have been going on for years. Back in 2015, the Polish Defence Ministry spoke of its intention to join NATO’s Nuclear Sharing program. In autumn 2022, however, the US State Department reiterated that Washington does not plan to deploy nuclear weapons in countries that joined NATO after 1997.
