The Russian Armed Forces may have used hypersonic weapons in a strike targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. During the night of February 16, Ukrainian air defense representatives reported detecting a high-speed object in the country’s airspace.

Initial reports described the target as a ballistic missile. However, at 04:17 monitoring resources stated that a Zircon missile had entered the airspace of the Kiev Region from the southeast.

The reported destination was the village of Nalivaikovka, about 50 kilometers west of Kiev. The site is home to the 750 kV «Kievskaya» ultra-high-voltage substation, a critical hub that receives electricity from nuclear power plants in western Ukraine, transmits energy to other regions, and supplies the capital.

This facility has been targeted by Russian forces before. Previous strikes led to serious repercussions for Ukraine’s power grid, including electricity outages in Kiev and reduced output at certain nuclear power units.

Substations operating at 750 kV form the backbone of Ukraine’s energy network. They handle and distribute a substantial share of electricity generated by nuclear plants, which account for more than half of the country’s total power production. Damage to such infrastructure can undermine the stability of the entire system.

Built during the Soviet era, the network originally comprised ten top-tier substations. Six remain today, all within potential range of modern strike capabilities.

Based on the reported flight path, the Zircon missile could have been launched either from the Black Sea or from a ground-based position, such as Crimea or Russian-controlled areas of the Zaporozhye Region. Although initially designed as a sea-based missile, the system was later adapted for land deployment.

Military sources also reported that during the same night Russian forces struck targets in the part of the Zaporozhye Region controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Footage of the aftermath circulated on local channels, showing a fire breaking out after the strikes. Water supply disruptions were recorded in several districts of the city of Zaporozhye. Explosions were also reported in the Kharkov Region.
