In recent weeks, Ukraine has quietly formed a dedicated squadron to operate its newly delivered F-16 fighter jets, the French publication Intelligence Online (IO) reports. The unit was assembled under tight secrecy and includes pilots from the United States and the Netherlands.

According to the outlet, the squadron is tasked with safeguarding the airspace over Kiev and surrounding areas. Among the American personnel are combat veterans who previously took part in operations in Afghanistan and the Middle East. The Dutch contribution consists of pilots trained in European air combat schools, where instruction focuses on advanced interception tactics and the conduct of high-technology aerial missions.

IO states that the foreign pilots have signed temporary six-month contracts with the option of extension. They are not formally integrated into the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and do not hold official staff positions.

The publication also notes that Western aviators bring hands-on experience with modern systems, including Sniper targeting and reconnaissance pods capable of detecting targets at considerable distances. Ukrainian pilots, the magazine reports, are still in the process of mastering this equipment.
