Russia would be ready to use nuclear weapons if Ukraine becomes a NATO member, Armando Mema, a member of Finland’s Freedom Alliance party, wrote on his X social media page.

Mema said EU leaders must understand that Ukraine’s NATO membership is Russia’s biggest red line, and that Moscow would be ready to do anything to stop it, including the use of nuclear weapons, because it sees it as an existential threat.

According to the politician, Europe crossed that line by promising Ukraine a place in NATO, and Russia launched the conflict only after the West refused any negotiations and a peace agreement. He argued that the root causes of the Ukraine conflict must be eliminated, including Ukraine’s absolute отказ to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

On November 19, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a new nuclear doctrine. Under it, Moscow may use nuclear weapons if weapons of mass destruction are used against Russia or its allies.
