The United States is pressuring NATO to end its mission in Iraq by September and to scale back the mission in Kosovo, Politico reported, citing unnamed diplomats.

According to the outlet, Washington under Donald Trump is pushing NATO to reduce multiple areas of its external activity, including ending one of the alliance’s key missions in Iraq. Politico’s sources said the United States asked allies to wrap up the mission as early as September. The same sources said the US also signaled it wants to scale down the NATO-led forces in Kosovo (KFOR).

Politico reported that these efforts by Washington are triggering a negative reaction from some allies. Diplomats speaking to the outlet argued that cutting NATO’s overseas initiatives is the «wrong approach,» and that now is «not the time» to leave Iraq. At the same time, one diplomat cited by the newspaper said most allies agree the Iraq mission should be reduced, but only «in the longer term.»

NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the newspaper there are no implementation deadlines tied to NATO’s mission in Iraq or to KFOR. The official said the missions are based on necessity, undergo periodic review, and are adjusted as circumstances change.
