Russian weapons developers are pressing ahead with new air-to-air and air-to-surface munitions tailored for the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter. Among the latest projects is the S-71 «Monochrom», images of which surfaced on the Telegram channel Voennaya khronika.

The published photographs show the missile mounted on an external hardpoint of the aircraft. Judging by its design, the developers appear to have prioritized reduced radar visibility. The fuselage contours are shaped with low observability in mind, while the tail features a V-shaped configuration.

Powered by a TRDD-50 turbojet engine, the Monochrom is capable of reaching speeds of up to 0.6 Mach. It can operate at altitudes of up to eight kilometers as well as at extremely low levels. The same engine is used in Russia’s Kh-59M and Kh-101 cruise missiles.

Earlier, an American-made M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket system was destroyed in Chernigov Region after being used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to strike targets on Russian territory. According to one version of events, the strike on that system may have been carried out using the Monochrom.
