During a meeting with permanent members of the Security Council, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would continue to adhere to the central quantitative limits of the New START Treaty for an additional year after February 5, 2026.

Putin emphasized that future decisions regarding the continuation of these voluntary self-restrictions would be based on an ongoing assessment of the situation.

He also highlighted that the effectiveness of this measure would depend on the actions of the United States. According to the Russian president, the U.S. must act similarly, avoiding any steps that could undermine or disrupt the balance of strategic deterrence forces. Furthermore, Putin reiterated that while Russia is not interested in an arms race, it is fully prepared to respond to any threats.
