CNN reported this assessment, citing its own sources. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, accused the Chinese authorities of violating international obligations and did not rule out the possibility that Beijing could be preparing a series of tests involving charges with yields measured in hundreds of tons. In response, Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, dismissed the claims as political manipulation. At the same time, according to the American side, the U. S. Department of Defense believes China may be pursuing low-yield tactical nuclear weapons, potentially intended for use in regional conflicts, including scenarios involving the island of Taiwan.
