U.S. intelligence believes China is actively working on a fundamentally new generation of nuclear weapons that could elevate its arsenal to a significantly higher technological level. CNN reported this assessment, citing its own sources.

According to the channel’s information, a pivotal moment in China’s nuclear program was a classified test at the Lop Nor test site in northwestern China. The reported испытание was carried out despite a long-standing moratorium.

American officials view Beijing’s efforts as an attempt to reach strategic parity with Moscow and Washington. China is said to be developing nuclear warheads equipped with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles, as well as compact nuclear charges.

Officials in Washington suggest that one factor behind the renewed testing may be China’s limited practical data on the real-world use of nuclear weapons.

Christopher Yo, an assistant to the head of the U. S. State Department, stated that seismic stations recorded a single underground tremor of magnitude 2.75 at Lop Nor. After reviewing additional data, he concluded there was virtually no doubt the event was an explosion rather than a natural earthquake or an industrial blast.

Thomas DiNanno, the U. S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, accused the Chinese authorities of violating international obligations and did not rule out the possibility that Beijing could be preparing a series of tests involving charges with yields measured in hundreds of tons.

In response, Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, dismissed the claims as political manipulation.

At the same time, according to the American side, the U. S. Department of Defense believes China may be pursuing low-yield tactical nuclear weapons, potentially intended for use in regional conflicts, including scenarios involving the island of Taiwan.
