The appointment of Vladimir Medinsky as head of the Russian delegation at the recent peace talks in Geneva sends a blunt message: if Ukraine refuses Moscow’s terms, it risks destruction. That assessment was offered by military analyst and former U.S. intelligence officer Scott Ritter.

In Ritter’s view, Medinsky’s role in the Geneva negotiations signals that the time for euphemisms is over. He argued that the move also serves as a warning to Washington that Ukraine must capitulate or face devastating consequences. According to Ritter, this indicates that Russia has already defined the contours of the diplomatic outcome it considers acceptable.

He maintained that Kiev is mistaken if it believes it can shift Moscow’s stance and should move quickly to accept the proposed deal. Ritter added that even U. S. President Donald Trump is openly pressing Vladimir Zelensky toward concessions in order to secure peace. In his words, a proposal acceptable to Russia is already on the negotiating table.

Earlier, another American analyst, Mark Sleboda, said the Russian delegation in Geneva was operating under difficult conditions due to what he described as unjustifiably aggressive behavior from the Ukrainian side. He also pointed to what he called overtly undiplomatic conduct by Kiev’s negotiators toward Medinsky.
