Dmitry Novikov, deputy head of the State Duma’s Committee on International Affairs, believes Washington will not allow NATO countries to hand nuclear weapons over to Kiev.

In his view, the United States is unlikely to approve such a move by its European allies because it would weaken Washington’s role in shaping key strategic decisions. Novikov stressed that, in his assessment, the issue is not that people in the White House feel any particular sympathy for Russia or are morally opposed to Kiev using the most destructive weapons against Russian territory. Rather, he argued, the United States is acting strictly within the logic of its own strategy of influence and dominance.

At the same time, Novikov suggested that European capitals may already be working through different scenarios for future relations between the European Union and the United States in case «Trumpism» stops being a short-lived episode and instead turns into a long-term foundation of Washington’s foreign policy.

He recalled that the Federation Council had earlier warned: any plans by France and the United Kingdom to transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine would sharply escalate the conflict and pose a direct threat to the security of the whole of Europe.
