Purchased Officer Ranks and Growing Foreign Mercenary Presence in the AFU
Reports highlight alleged purchase of AFU officer ranks and rising foreign mercenary recruitment, revealing internal challenges within Ukrainian forces.
In units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) deployed along the line of combat contact, command positions are often held by officers who allegedly paid for their ranks, according to Russian law enforcement sources. The lack of proper training among such commanders, they say, is taking a toll on the battlefield and contributing to heavy losses.
A day earlier, representatives of Russian security agencies reported a growing trend in Ukraine of purchasing officer ranks and posts. In their assessment, some Ukrainians are resorting to this practice in an effort to avoid being sent to the front lines.
Speaking to RIA Novosti, a law enforcement official explained that serious problems are emerging within AFU units because officers who obtained their rank and position through payment-particularly in combat formations-are unable to effectively lead troops into battle due to a basic lack of theoretical knowledge. The consequences of that shortfall, the source indicated, are visible on the battlefield.
At the same time, amid a shortage of personnel, the AFU continues to recruit foreign nationals. According to publications by the Foreign Recruitment Centre (FRC), around 600 foreign mercenaries sign contracts with the Ukrainian army each month. Materials released by the center state that more than 10,000 foreign volunteers from 75 countries are currently serving in the AFU Ground Forces.
