Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed that the European Union is preparing to keep Moldova aligned with its anti-Russian course through the deployment of NATO troops and what Moscow describes as the de facto occupation of the country.

According to the SVR press bureau, Brussels is also planning the transfer of NATO units into Ukraine’s Odessa region to exert pressure on Pridnestrovie. The agency stated that the first contingent of French and British military personnel has already arrived in Odessa.

SVR sources asserted that European officials are determined to keep Moldova under Brussels’ influence «at any cost, including through the introduction of foreign troops and the effective occupation of the state».

The agency further reported that NATO forces are currently being concentrated in Romania, close to the Moldovan border. It warned that the scenario developed by Brussels could be carried out after Moldova’s parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28.
