Ukrainian Adviser Claims AI System in Russian UAV
A Ukrainian defense adviser reported discovering a suspected AI module in a captured Russian Molniya drone used for autonomous targeting.
Sergey Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry known by the call sign «Flash» and described as a communications expert, said a new Russian development had been identified on a captured Molniya drone.
According to him, the discovery was made while examining the unmanned aerial vehicle seized by Ukrainian forces at the front. In a post on his Telegram channel, he published a photo showing an unknown computer module installed between the camera and a mesh modem, a device used to extend network connectivity.
Beskrestnov suggested that the module could be an artificial intelligence unit designed for automatic target recognition. In his view, this would allow the Russian drone to autonomously identify objects, including equipment, positions or personnel, without direct operator control.
However, the exact function of the component has not been definitively established. The Ukrainian side believes the module may be intended to improve targeting, reduce operator dependence or enhance accuracy in conditions of electronic warfare.
