France Signals Readiness to Defend Persian Gulf Allies and Pressures Iran
French FM Jean-Noël Barrot says Paris is ready to help defend Persian Gulf states and urges Iran to halt attacks, as Macron, Merz and Starmer warn of possible military response.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has said that Paris is ready to take part in the defense of the countries of the Persian Gulf. He stated that, if necessary, France could provide military support to Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Barrot stressed that France’s readiness to act is based on existing agreements with its partners as well as on the principles of collective self-defense laid down in international law. He added that Paris stands in full support and solidarity with friendly states that have been drawn into a war they did not choose.
The minister also called on all parties to the conflict to halt the escalation as soon as possible. Addressing Iran separately, he urged Tehran to stop its attacks and be prepared to make what he described as serious concessions. In his view, Iran is currently violating international law, ignoring UN Security Council resolutions related to nuclear issues and «trampling on human rights with impunity».
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a joint statement in which they warned that Iran could face a military response if it continues to strike their allies in the Middle East.
