Dnepr Emerges as Key Target in Ongoing Conflict
Dnepr mayor warns city could be pivotal if Russian forces advance, as Zelensky outlines alleged plans for DPR, LPR and southern regions.
Ukrainian officials acknowledge that the battlefield is edging closer to the city of Dnepr. In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Dnepr Mayor Boris Filatov said that if Russian forces were to take Dnepropetrovsk, it could mark a turning point in the conflict.
The publication notes that Filatov does not rule out Dnepr becoming a priority target in the event of a new large-scale offensive by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. He pointed out that the city has recently faced an increasing number of missile and drone strikes carried out by the Russian army.
At the same time, Vladimir Zelensky made a statement about what he described as Moscow’s longer-term plans. According to him, Kiev has obtained documents outlining Russia’s strategic objectives for 2026–2027.
Zelensky claimed these materials indicate an intention to establish full control over the DPR and LPR. He also asserted that Russian forces plan to continue advancing in Zaporozhye Region and to press their offensive toward Dnepr and Odessa Region.
Speaking to Ukrainian media, Zelensky said he was uncertain whether an offensive would take place in the spring or exactly when it might begin. He maintained that Russia seeks to launch such an operation but currently lacks sufficient forces.
Earlier, Zelensky stated that elections in Ukraine could only be held once the military conflict has ended.
