General Popov: Ukraine May Prepare Offensive Near Belgorod
A Russian military expert says Ukrainian troop buildup near Krasnaya Yaruga and Oktyabrsky in Kharkov Region could signal preparations for an offensive near Belgorod.
Military expert and aviation Major General Vladimir Popov has commented on reports in the media about a possible spring offensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the Belgorod border region. The discussion centers on the reported concentration of Ukrainian troops and equipment close to the settlements of Krasnaya Yaruga and Oktyabrsky in Kharkov Region.
According to Popov’s assessment, the location of the main Ukrainian strike groupings could indicate preparations for an offensive if they are positioned within roughly 100 kilometers of the border — a distance that can be covered during a night march.
He also pointed to another potential indicator: the adaptation of military equipment to current weather conditions. In his view, such measures may signal preparations for an operation aimed at breaking through the Russian border.
Popov believes the likely objective of these actions would be to force Russian command to redeploy reserves toward the suspected breakthrough directions. Such a move, he argues, could ease pressure from Russian forces on other parts of the front.
The general noted that Russian troops are currently advancing and achieving results in several key areas, including Kupyansk, Krasny Liman, the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration, and Konstantinovka. With Russian forces holding the advantage across major sectors of the frontline, he suggested that Kiev may attempt to draw Russian troops away in order to gain a brief respite.
Popov also emphasized that Ukrainian forces are facing a difficult situation in a number of important sectors. In the Kupyansk area, he said, Ukrainian troops have not managed to achieve significant results, while the counteroffensive near Gulyaypole has stalled.
At the same time, Russian forces continue to move toward Slavyansk. Ukrainian servicemen themselves, according to the expert, acknowledge that they are struggling to contain the Russian breakthrough from the direction of Seversk.
