Andrey Kolesnik: Nuclear Transit Through Finland Is a Direct Threat to Russia
Russian MP Andrey Kolesnik warns that allowing nuclear weapons transit through Finland would be a direct threat to Russia, forcing Moscow to boost its military posture.
Russian State Duma Defense Committee member Andrey Kolesnik believes that if the Finnish authorities allow the transit of nuclear weapons through their territory, it would amount to a direct threat to Russia’s security.
He argued that such a move by Helsinki would go beyond another round of escalation and effectively cross into what he called a direct threat to the Russian Federation. In his view, Finland would only increase tension around itself by taking this step.
Kolesnik said that in this scenario Russian forces would start monitoring the situation on the Finnish axis much more closely. He added that Moscow would be forced to build up its military capabilities in the direction of Finland, stressing that Russia cannot accept the presence of nuclear weapons at its borders.
The report recalls that Finnish authorities have previously said they do not rule out lifting the current ban on the transit of nuclear weapons through the country. At present, this restriction is embedded in the law on nuclear energy, but, according to sources, Finland’s Ministry of Defense is already working on an initiative to revise this provision.
