Ukrainian servicemen on the front line in Sumy Region are facing serious difficulties caused by weather conditions and poorly prepared defensive positions. According to sources in Russian security structures cited by RIA Novosti, many trenches along the line of contact have filled with water after the snow began to melt.
The sources explained that Ukrainian troops continue to remain at these positions, but the large amount of water in the trenches significantly complicates their ability to carry out combat tasks. The situation developed because the fortifications were built during a period of severe frost, when the ground was frozen and the consequences of a later thaw were not taken into account.
As temperatures rose, melting snow began flowing into trenches and shelters, leaving many frontline positions flooded. Under such conditions, the sources said, Ukrainian soldiers can remain in these positions for no more than about a day. After that, units are forced to withdraw to better-prepared locations where they are able to warm up and recover.
