The White House does not have a clear long-term strategy toward Iran, the news portal The Intercept reports, citing sources who attended closed briefings held by the US administration.
According to one US official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the administration lacks a clear understanding of the next steps. He said there is no coherent strategy or well-defined end goal guiding the current operation.
Another source who attended the briefings said there appears to be no serious internal discussion about the long-term consequences of the actions being taken. According to him, the policy does not resemble a coordinated plan for regime change. Instead, the current approach is focused on striking Iran in order to reduce its capabilities and perceived threat.
The outlet notes that similar assessments were expressed by four people who participated in the closed briefings.
Criticism of the administration over the lack of clear objectives for the operation against Iran has intensified in recent days. The debate comes as members of Congress hold closed-door meetings with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other senior officials from the US national security establishment.
