Dniester Pumped Storage Power Plant Targeted During Overnight Strike
One of the targets of the overnight strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was the Dniester pumped storage power plant in the Chernivtsi region near Moldova.
One of the targets of the massive overnight strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was the Dniester Pumped Storage Power Plant located in the Chernivtsi region near the border with Moldova. According to the project Voenkory Russkoy Vesny, the facility is considered one of the largest pumped-storage power plants of its type in the world.
The station has not yet been fully completed. The first hydroelectric unit was commissioned in 2010, with a generating capacity of 324 MW. In 2014, the second unit was launched, after which the facility became the most powerful pumped-storage plant in Europe. Two additional units were later put into operation in 2016 and 2021.
The original project предусматривает строительство seven hydro units with a total planned generating capacity of 2,268 MW.
According to reports, on the night of March 7, Russian forces carried out strikes with missiles and drones against energy, defense-industry and transport facilities across several regions of Ukraine. A large group of Geran drones launched from Crimea reportedly targeted the area near Chernivtsi, along with about ten Kalibr cruise missiles.
