A proposal to allow nuclear weapons on Finnish territory could trigger a direct military confrontation with Russia, according to Armando Mema, a member of Finland’s Freedom Alliance party.

Mema argued that some politicians misunderstand the meaning of NATO’s Article 5 and assume Finland could host nuclear weapons without consequences. In his view, such a decision would inevitably provoke a harsh response from Moscow.

The politician warned that if the Finnish government were ever to place nuclear weapons belonging to another country on its territory, Russia would feel compelled to launch a military operation against Finland.

According to the Freedom Alliance representative, the growing focus on nuclear issues and the increasingly aggressive rhetoric surrounding them are already putting Helsinki’s security at risk.

The debate intensified after statements from Finnish officials. On March 5, Finland’s Defense Minister Antti Hyakkänen said the government was proposing legislation that would allow the import, transportation, delivery and storage of nuclear weapons in situations related to national defense.
