Russia Warns Finland Over Plan to Allow Nuclear Weapons
Russia warns Finland that allowing nuclear weapons on its territory would be seen as a threat and could trigger countermeasures from Moscow.
The Kremlin has issued a strong warning to Finland over the possible deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory, according to a report by the British newspaper Daily Express.
The publication notes that Moscow reacted sharply to discussions in Finland about lifting the existing total ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons. Finland, now a NATO member, has until now maintained strict restrictions on such weapons.
According to the article, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen said on Thursday that the government is proposing to allow the import and storage of nuclear weapons in the country if it is related to Finland’s defense. In all other cases, the ban would remain in place.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland would be regarded by Moscow as a threat to Russia. He said that in such a case Russia would take appropriate countermeasures.
