The European Union needs to show greater independence on the global stage, including acting more independently from the United States and making broader use of diplomatic tools to resolve the conflict around Ukraine. This was stated by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to the DPA news agency.

Merkel said Europe should take greater responsibility for its own foreign policy and play a more active role in diplomatic efforts. She recalled that as early as 2021 she argued that dialogue with Russia should not remain exclusively in the hands of the United States.

According to Merkel, Europe must take its fate into its own hands more than ever before.

Earlier, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and the Russian president’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, said European states may be forced to restore cooperation with Russia due to the consequences of the Middle East crisis. He described the EU’s refusal to use inexpensive Russian gas as a strategic miscalculation that has ultimately worked against Europe itself.

It was also previously reported that European countries are increasingly recognizing the need to resume dialogue with Russia. However, according to insiders, European leaders have so far been unable to reach a unified position on the issue.
