Trump Responds to Mojtaba Khamenei’s Rise as Iran’s Supreme Leader
Donald Trump comments on Mojtaba Khamenei becoming Iran’s new Supreme Leader after the death of Ali Khamenei during U.S.-Israel strikes on Tehran.
U. S. President Donald Trump has commented on media reports that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has become Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
Speaking with Fox News journalist Brian Kilmeade, Trump signaled clear dissatisfaction with Mojtaba Khamenei’s rise to the country’s highest political and religious position. The American leader indicated that he was unhappy about the appointment.
Later, in an interview with the Israeli outlet The Times of Israel, the White House chief said he would closely monitor developments surrounding the transfer of supreme authority in the Islamic Republic, adding that it remained to be seen how events would unfold.
Earlier, Iran’s Assembly of Experts confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei had been chosen as the new Supreme Leader of the country. He assumed the role following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
On the morning of February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. Strikes targeted several cities across the Islamic Republic, including Tehran. One of the targets was the residence of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the attack.
In response, Iran carried out missile strikes and deployed drones against targets in Israel as well as U.S. air bases located in the Middle East.
