Russia Seen as Possible Mediator in Iran–US Talks
Russia may act as a mediator in potential Iran–US negotiations, experts say, as Putin and Trump discuss Middle East tensions and possible diplomatic solutions.
Russia could act as a mediator in potential negotiations between Iran and the United States, according to Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and an expert on American politics.
Blokhin told RIA Novosti that Moscow’s position in the current situation may prove unusually advantageous. Russia maintains a strategic partnership with Iran, which it considers an ally, while at the same time preserving relatively stable relations with the United States.
In this context, Blokhin suggested that Russia could serve as a moderator in a possible diplomatic process aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East. He also noted that Moscow might offer a venue for talks and, if necessary, convey Tehran’s position directly to the American side.
Earlier, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reported that on the evening of March 9, President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump. According to Ushakov, the two leaders discussed developments in the Middle East, the situation in Venezuela, and prospects for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou believes the call between Trump and Putin may be linked to the difficulties Washington faced after its attack on Iran. In his view, the US president found himself in a challenging position and could have turned to Putin for assistance under those circumstances.
