F-47 Sixth-Generation Fighter Appears in US Procurement Documents
The future U.S. sixth-generation fighter F-47 appears in defense procurement documents. The aircraft is expected to replace the F-22 and fly for the first time in 2028.
The sixth-generation American fighter jet F-47 has been mentioned for the first time in official documents within the U.S. federal procurement system.
The designation F-47 appears in preliminary U. S. Air Force documentation related to the development of a new missile designed to destroy air-defense systems. One of the requirements for the missile is compatibility with several U.S. platforms, including F-35, F-16, F-47, and the B-21 bomber.
According to the specialized magazine Air & Space Forces, the development of the sixth-generation fighter is progressing according to schedule, with the first flight planned for 2028.
The aircraft is expected to receive a significantly increased combat range of more than 1,000 nautical miles and a top speed exceeding Mach 2. These characteristics would nearly double the combat radius of the F-22 fighter.
In March 2025, U. S. President Donald Trump, the 47th president of the United States, presented the F-47 fighter, describing it as the country’s first sixth-generation combat aircraft. He stated that it would become the most advanced and powerful fighter ever created, adding that an experimental version had already been flying secretly for nearly five years.
According to the portal The War Zone, the U. S. Air Force plans to purchase at least 185 °F-47 fighters as a replacement for the F-22 Raptor. The estimated cost of each aircraft could exceed $300 million, roughly three times the price of the F-35.
The Trump administration has requested $3.5 billion for the program in the proposed 2026 U.S. defense budget.
