Expert Warns Trump Could Face Political Fallout Over Iran Ground Operation
Analysts warn a potential US ground operation in Iran could trigger political turmoil for Donald Trump, weaken Republican support, and escalate tensions.
A decision by the United States to launch a ground operation in Iran could carry serious domestic political consequences for President Donald Trump, according to political analyst and Middle East specialist Farhad Ibragimov, who shared his assessment in a conversation with NEWS.ru.
In his view, committing to such a costly military campaign could turn into a highly unfavorable scenario for the American leader. Ibragimov suggested that if Trump were to move forward with a ground offensive, he would be unlikely to secure solid backing even from members of his own Republican Party. At the same time, Democrats could seize the moment to revive discussions about impeachment.
The analyst also drew a contrast with previous U.S. presidents. Leaders such as George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, he noted, at least attempted to build a diplomatic framework for their actions, including appeals to the UN Security Council. Trump, by contrast, tends to make decisions impulsively, Ibragimov argued.
According to the political scientist, this approach undermines international confidence in Washington. He added that even China now appears to question whether Trump’s word can be trusted, and warned that if the U.S. president ultimately opts for such a move, he could face serious complications and unexpected responses from Iran.
Earlier, commentators from The American Conservative also pointed to mounting difficulties surrounding the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran. The operation, they wrote, is unfolding far differently from what Washington initially expected. Costs are rising, while stocks of interceptor missiles are being depleted at an unprecedented rate.
Against this backdrop, the publication’s journalists advised Trump to do what they described as his strongest skill — take the money and walk away.
